Emergency Dental Care FAQ

What is a dental emergency?

We define a dental emergency as severe or intense pain, swelling, or discomfort that can be caused by an injury, accident or an unknown reason. Dental problems do not often resolve themselves and can lead to further problems and pain if not corrected. If you have severe tooth pain, or have chipped or cracked a tooth, call our office right away.

Why might I need emergency dental care?

Sports injuries are some of the most common dental emergencies we see, and it’s not just professional athletes. Even a friendly family game can result in an accident. Car and bike accidents can also cause injuries that require an emergency dentist visit. But we also treat patients for severe toothaches, infections and gum disease.

How can I treat my injury while I wait to be seen in your office?

Dental pain can be difficult to deal with. Try using a cold compress on the area that is in pain to reduce swelling. In some cases, an over-the-counter pain reliever can offer some comfort until we can see you and treat the issue. If possible, call our office right away so we can offer tips on how to manage your pain or discomfort until you can be seen in our office.

What should I do if I have a severe toothache?

Toothaches can be hard to ignore and may be a sign that you need a dental procedure such as a root canal. Until you can be seen in our office, we recommend brushing and flossing carefully. This can remove any leftover food debris that could be causing irritation. An over-the-counter pain reliever, such as aspirin, can also provide some comfort. If the pain continues to worsen, call our office right away.

What do I do if I break a tooth?

Start by calling our office as soon as you can. Rinse your mouth and use an ice pack to reduce swelling. If you find the piece of your tooth that has broken off, you can place it in milk to save it so we can recreate the tooth if necessary.
